Some books (102 actually)

Here are some selected features and recent book titles. And yes, I really have published more than a hundred books, I was a little shocked to realise the other day. Well, my excuse is that I love books, and love shooting for them, evem writing for them.

Ricelands

My latest book (not counting those on photography). In it, I write about a subject close to my heart and even closer to my stomach - the culture of food in Southeast Asia. Learn about one of the world's tastiest regional cuisines and how it's really prepared an eaten in homes, not at all the same as in restaurants in the West. And there are two hundred of my photographs, as well.

Spirit of Asia

Published by Thames & Hudson, Spirit of Asia is a journey through the sacred places of the East, from western Tibet to Japan and from animist beliefs to Hinduism and Buddhism. Over the course of many years I have been exploring the faith inspired by these special religious sites, which include Mount Kailash, Adam's Peak, Bodh Gaya, Kanchipuram and Isé-jingu, among many others.

Asia Modern

Beginning with Japan Modern - the first-ever book on modern avant-garde Japanese homes, and winner of the Best Architecture and Interior Design Book Award at the 2001 Chicago Book Fair - a whole series of books on modern Asian design and architecture, concentrating on homes and gardens. The latest is on China.

Sudan

I spent two-and-a-half years photographing Sudan as part of a book project that I undertook with an old friend. Timothy Carney, former US Ambassador to the country, and his wife Victoria Butler. We managed to get full cooperation from both the Khartoum government and the South, with the result that we had a unique total access to all parts of the country. This made it possible to realise what is the first book ever to cover the whole of Sudan.

Paul Theroux reviewed it: "The Sudan for most people is just a name in the news. This magnificent book corrects that; its wise and well-informed text, and lavish pictures, give the country a face - irresistible, photogenic, bewitching and profoundly human." Also William Shawcross, author of Sideshow: "This superb story of the Sudan does everything. Michael Freeman's photographs portray both the glory and the grimness of this huge and tantalizing country." And president Jimmy Carter wrote, in his foreword to the book: "Michael Freeman's camera has caught the essential humanity in Sudan. He reminds us that life even in the most difficult times has its joy."

Cambodia

In addition to several books on Angkor and Khmer ruins around Cambodia and across the mountains in neighboring Northeast Thailand and Laos, I also wrote a book of my travels and experiences for Reaktion Book's Topographics series in new travel writing. These experiences are the vehicle for exploring the history and culture of this frankly strange country, once the most powerful on the Southeast Asian mainland.
